Unfortunately, a PET scan in April confirmed that the increasing pain in my ribs and back was due to metastasis in my bones. My recovery from surgery was slow, but although fatigued and having lost one of my vocal cords, I felt well even during a fairly intensive radiotherapy course.

I had an 8-hour operation to remove my thyroid and a large number of lymph nodes. Further biopsies in January confirmed the wisdom of my surgeon. I spent an anxious Christmas with a family who didn't know this drama was going on. Fortunately, she was not satisfied and referred me to a head and neck surgeon, who immediately recognised and suspected medullary thyroid cancer. My doctor sent me for an ultrasound and biopsy, which returned indeterminate results. So, the sudden discovery of a lump in my neck alerted but didn't alarm me.

In late 2016, as a healthy 67 year old male I had absolutely no symptoms.
